Stay on Pointe

by Evelyn Vanegas, The Scene, March 2009

Sometimes it’s on the sidewalk, as you’re watching a man tap his feet while he collects bills in a hat. Sometimes it’s in a movie, as Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez twist and twirl in a passionate tango. And sometimes its in the fourth row orchestra, as you’re watching the big number in a musical, and you realize; it’s not the music, not the lights, not the acting or the set that moves you, it’s the way they dance. It doesn’t matter where it strikes you, but once the desire to dance sets in, nothing else can cure you of it. For some, it remains an impossible dream. But for those who dare to try, they often find a passion and freedom for expression unlike anything.

One does not become a dancer overnight. First they must go through years of training, rehearsals, injuries, disappointments, failures, and achievements. But before that, they must make their start, the most difficult point in a dancer’s career.

The good news is that opportunities are everywhere. Dance studios, performance companies, and private instructors are constantly searching for individuals with no experience at all. And not only are they open to all levels of ability, many of them offer full scholarships. All you have to do is call and find out. And now you need not look so far. Next year’s visual and performing arts academy will provide the opportunity to begin your dancing career right in your own high school.

So what are you waiting for? All it takes is a phone call to stop fantasizing and start dancing.
