Film Buffs Aspire to Host by Sofia Riba, highlights, The Scene, Nov. 12
The murmuring and shuffling suddenly
subsides as the lights in the room dim. Last minute viewers find their
seats just as the showcasing begins. One after the other, each one
better than the last, the productions finally roll their end credits
after exploring every genre and subject in film. The whispers of
satisfied viewers Giving young filmmakers a chance to debut their work in a student run film festival has been at the top of Cristina Quevedo’s wish list since the start up of the Film Society. Quevedo, who sponsors the club as well as the film class, is cautiously optimistic about the idea. “[The Film Festival] would depend on interest and student motivation,” said Quevedo. Due to the ongoing budget cuts, the Film Society needs to raise funds to cover the costs of equipment, lighting, and other necessities. Although the Film Society is a popular club among students, class fees have yet to be paid. The “process of fundraising” would be a great part of the club added Quevedo. If the possibility turns into reality, The Film Festival would present a combination of films made in the film class and those made in the club. Being the Film Society’s first year, Quevedo has yet to discover who would be eligible to participate. The festival would undoubtedly have a variety of styles and genres included. This can be seen even in Film 1 class, where students recently mad parodies using a given director’s personal technique. Modeling a silent film using Tim Burton’s approach is one example of director style. “I hope that if we have a film festival by the students, it will encourage others to want to participate,” concluded Quevedo.
