Track Team Gets freshmen involved by Francesca Synder, highlights, Sports, March 2009
“Pain is temporary, but glory lasts forever” is a motto that seems to fit the track team at Coral Gables Senior High this year like a well-worked pair of cleats. Although many students have been part of this team for several years, this is a new experience for the freshmen recruits that are new to the environment and eager to engulf themselves in it. “At first I joined to be on a team, but then I began to love it,” said freshman runner Emily Shabby Sedghat. As a way to meet new people and interact with the athletic department of the school system, this opportunity presents both a physical and mental experience for the incoming freshman track team members. Whether through the grapevine in the hallways or on flyers posted on the doors, they have been made aware of the opportunity to join the track program. These students have consequentially pounced upon this opportunity with vigor because of the fact that it is very convenient, yet at the same time worthwhile and challenging. “Sometimes we have light practice, sometimes they are hard,” said Rebecca Dwight. “The track team is like a family, we are very close and it is really everything I expected it to be.” Due to the fact that their high expectations were met, new freshman students are elated to be part of the track community. The mere thought of a team mentality and cooperation represents a great atmosphere and ambitious goal to work for. Although they are very content with the team, new regulations and organization have presented freshman with a tough time adjusting to the high school setting. The opportunity to compete against challenging opponents and watch as their vigorous practices materialize themselves in competition has given them an opportunity to redeem themselves as true members of the Coral Gables High community, inside and outside of the classroom.
