Volleyball makes strides under new coach by Farida Karim, highlights, Sports, March 2009
According to the International Volleyball Federation, volleyball is the second most popular team sport in the USA, so there’s no doubt that fans have been filling the bleachers at Coral Gables Cavaliers boys’ volleyball games. Like most other team sports, volleyball requires determination, dedication, speed and teamwork. The sport also requires both offense and defense structures while passing and blocking. And unlike basketball or football, it also requires spiking, setting and vertical jumping in key. This year, the team had a shaky start especially after their previous coach, Erin Graham, left for personal reasons at the end of last year. However, their new coach, Allison Fitzsimmons gladly filled the role. “As one great coach left, another took her place,” said junior, Paul Isaac Molina. This year’s team captain, Frank Gonzalez, is all about motivation. The volleyball team has been close to winning in the past years but this year he believes they will be able to step it up a notch. Said Gonzalez: “We have a lot of seniors this year, but we also have a lot of new talent. We’re a great team and we’re going to win.”
