In light of the ongoing budget crisis, town hall meetings were held last March at several schools across the county – one of which was held here.
Yoga
The 2008-2009 school year marked the beginning of the first yoga class not only at our school, but also within the county. Biology teacher and yoga instructor, Dr. Melanie Mitchell, has brought to our school her yoga skills, which she has been teaching for the past 8 years at her own yoga studio. Her experience in physical fitness from her minor in physical education and her inspiration from her previous disabled students have prompted her to start a program where her students could develop techniques for the disabled so yoga could become more versatile.

As a new venture to save funds, the school district has decided to withhold from administering this year’s Norm Referenced Test (NRT) to students. Instead, freshmen and sophomores will take the regular FCAT reading, math, and for juniors, science. However, with the absence of what was vastly considered the “easier” test, students are now left to wonder if the FCAT scores will be relied on more heavily than before. by Sofia Riba and Maria Pablo, highlights, News, March 2009

Young filmmaker Rick Troutner has planned to debut his new film since he began writing the script in September of 2007. Troutner condensed 22 hours of footage, 22 tapes worth of film, and two years of work, into a two hours and twenty five minute feature film on Wednesday, March 17th. A wide audience of Troutner’s friends, family, and other students attended the premier of Remix 3 at the Arts and Minds Center in Coconut Grove. Entrance was discounted to five dollars through pre-sale tickets sold by members of TV production, but remained seven dollars at the door.

All eligible athletes are about to receive their letterman jackets. Many students are proud of these jackets because they represent their accomplishment in the sport they play. “I think it’s awesome to have these jackets, and it’s great to show off what sport each of us play, especially in baseball even though girls think we’re a**holes .” Oswald Silvestre, sophomore, said. |
