Letterman Jackets Instill Pride by Ashley Rivera, highlights, News, November 12, 2008
“It’s an honor to get a letterman jacket and to play in a great football team.” Patrick McCain, Junior, said. All eligible athletes are about to receive their letterman jackets. Many students are proud of these jackets because they represent their accomplishment in the sport they play. “I think it’s awesome to have these jackets, and it’s great to show off what sport each of us play, especially in baseball even though girls think we’re a**holes .” Oswald Silvestre, sophomore, said. It shows others that students do not just go home and do nothing. A 1% of athletics are receiving these jackets in a nut shell probably 10 of athletes for now and then later on when the word gets out most likely they will order more. Most of them stay afterschool for practices, games, and even come on weekends to host games. “I totally agree for the letterman jacket we all deserve one.” Carlos Martinez, sophomore, said. Athletics will be purchasing these jackets and the letters will be provided from Eric Molina the Athletic director. These jackets are a tradition since we can remember; they are a big representation to the school. The ones receiving these jackets with letters varies on the person, depends if they’ve been in a team for 4 years or even a couple of years. Earning a letter is an honor especially those who are in varsity, yet again it varies on participation and level. Pins on these jackets it represent what sport they play. Letterman jackets have been around for years, to the movie Grease to High School Musical. “It is a cool idea. They should make one for all those who are in sports, and represent what school we come from to what sport we play.” Kevin Orozco, freshman, said. Students like to show pride, representing where they came from and where they got their education. Athletes work hard to raise money for their team, selling candy and carwash tickets. They deserve credit for that also especially credit from the coaches putting in the maximum effort to help they’re players to do their very best. “To show that were part of the athletics, and we represent our school that I am proud of being.” Hector Colon, sophomore, said. These jackets can be a keepsake for anyone who’s involved in sports; most graduated students showcase them and keep them as a memory form their high school years. “Their like a class ring you wear for a little bit, and then you place them in a safe place to keep as a memento in a closet or frame.” Eric Molina, Athletic Director, said. Then when years go by and suddenly you see a letterman jacket in your closet you will realize you were part of something within the school, and you will leave a piece of memory in the field or the court. A big part of character went to that team and school showing that you were part of a big family.
