Laser Floyd

by Maria Pablo, The Scene, November 12, 2008

Every first Friday of each month, for just seven dollars, the Miami Science Museum offers Laser Floyd, laser shows that can be a fun alternative to your routine Friday nights. The first function starts at 7:00 PM, and the last one at 12:00 AM. Bands featured include Pink Floyd, The Doors, and The Beatles, among others. People of all ages and social groups show up to have a good time every month. It’s not surprising to see a largely diverse crowd patiently waiting for the next function. To many it is a colorful, entertaining, and cool place to hangout. Laser Floyd is a great place to relax with your friends to the tune of timeless masterpieces.

“They have good music and the lights go crazy,” sophomore, Catherine Rumano, a regular attendee at the shows, said.

Many also consider it psychedelic and out of the ordinary.

“It felt like an out of body experience,” stated freshman Mary Koehnk after attending her first laser show.

Others agreed and described the experience as dream-like.

“It was like a dream I had one time,” said first timer Emilia Musacchia, freshman at Design and Architecture Senior High.

Unfortunately the presence of drugs is an inevitable part of these shows, many say it’s a great place for a “tripout” and the shows are enhanced by the effects of drugs such as pot and hallucinogens.

“A lot of people go for the drugs,” Alexa Delgado, junior, said.

Nevertheless Laser Floyd still remains popular with teenagers and adults alike.

The shows are presented in the museum’s planetarium, where attendees are given 3-D glasses at the entrance. The glasses are used to heighten the experience offered by the lasers. Attendees can either choose to enjoy the show from the chairs or from the floor, usually filled with pillows and blankets from people who want to enjoy the show more comfortably. Each show lasts about an hour. The good music and colorful lasers make Laser Floyd a different experience to consider next Friday.
