A Day of Coming Out

by Nicole Leon

The fifth National Coming Out Day event was held in the new cafeteria on Friday October 10, although the actual event is celebrated on the 11th. Members of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) were in attendance as well as faculty and staff. What is coming out? It is the process of personally accepting your homosexuality and sharing it with family, co-workers and friends. Coming out is different for every gay or bisexual person. Some experience a lot of pain and anguish while for others acceptance is a joyous time. It's perfectly normal to experience fear, doubt, loneliness, anger and even depression.

During the Coming Out event there was an equal balance of gender acknowledgement. Both males and females spoke to the GSA members about their coming out experiences. They were able to inform everyone on the difference time has on coming out.

“Kids are definitely coming out a lot earlier today”, said guest speaker.

Each speaker with the exception of one graduated from Gables and were proud to return to share their experiences and help the younger generation. With the motivation from the speakers, some students felt compelled to be open with themselves and their peers as well, regarding their sexuality.

“I was able to come out because I was in a comfortable environment and the speakers inspired me to be myself”, anonymous male student at Gables said.

Although, the event was held to celebrate the acceptance of homosexuality it was not limited to heterosexual individuals.

“Even though I am not gay, I was there to support my friend because I knew it was a big day for her”, anonymous female student at Gables said.

Remember that coming out is an important event and you should never feel pressure to come out; come out when you feel comfortable. There are risks involved with coming out, but make sure to surround yourself with others that may be going through the same transition or who have already come out. They can be a great support network.
