Save Money on the Weekends

by Venus Vega, Insight, November 12, 2008

The crashing economy has done a number on students’ wallets. Fun has now become a word that many of teenagers can’t afford. Place like the movie theatres and the clubs are now given a second thought.

Entertainment is being put on hold with all of the economic crisis engulfing the nation, teenagers are only spending most of their money on what they really need.

“I try to spend most of my money on basics and less on supplements,” said Marlon Morraz, junior.

Others have ceased certain of their favorite weekend activities.

“I can’t go to the movies as often as I used to,” commented Camila Ceballos, freshman.

With such a tight budget teens are forced to find ways to have fun and keep a fat wallet.

Big parties are rarely seen now, expenses are too vast and hosting them can mean a big shock to your wallet.

“Getties” have become the popular source of fun on the weekends. These events are hosted by different people each weekend; and are a great alternative to the loud and expensive parties. The person hosting it only provides the location, it is up to the guests to bring what is needed, such as food and drinks. This way, expenses are equally distributed among everyone.

Other teens turn to crime to see a movie without spending any money. Sneaking into the movies is quiet popular now. Kids are figuring out loop holes in theatre security and using it to their advantage.

“The security in local theatres is like clockwork, knowing when they’re weak and strong will help you greatly,” said Rafael Hernandez, freshman.

Instead of relying on illegal methods, teenagers could skip the movie theatre all together and instead rent a movie. Blockbuster and other companies charge about five dollars per rental. Savings can reach up to 6 or 7 dollars.

Even in school, lunch has reached astounding prices. Instead of spending your precious dollars, why not bring your very own custom made lunch? It’s cheaper and much more convenient.

If you search all around you, there are many ways you can change your lifestyle. All the while you can still have fun and save a couple dollars.
