Paper Ballots Result in Smooth Election By Erika Hernandez, highlights, Features, March 2009
The flyers have settled at their’ rightful place on the bottom of floors, staircases, and garbage cans. Student Council elections are over and much to many students’ relief. Though this year elections were a bit different, instead of using Elect-Elite, and online computerized voting system that simplifies the voting system dramatically. Due to budget cuts, the school was unable to purchase the program this year so it was back to ballots. “The ballot counting and setting up process went smoothly, though it was very tedious. Student activities spent 2 and a half hours just counting and sorting ballots,” Alyssa Exposito, student activities member, said. The process of making the ballots was even longer. Having to make separate ballots for each grade, and dividing the ballots by classes and then making sure that the students and teachers sign and collect ballots correctly was a very long process, a process which could have been avoided through the use of Elect-Elite. “I think that the election process went well. I personally liked the ballot voting better, I thought it was more efficient, and I liked how the results were known quickly,” Steven De Nicola, sophomore, said. Elections, which were held February seventeenth, were an overall success according to Mrs. Ana Suarez, student activities director. “We had no problems with elections, the students signed and unused ballots were returned. Elections went very smoothly,” Suarez said. So now that new leaders have been chosen, what do they have in store for the future? Suarez offered a piece of advice for the future student council members: “Get ready to work hard!”
