Mr Coral Gables

Round Two

by Sophia Aitken, highlights, Features, February 2010

The most anticipated event of the year has returned for round two — Mr. Coral Gables is back with new nominees and even better performances. Last year Josh Gonzalez, Mr. Wrestling, won over the audience. This year’s frontrunners are Andre Guttierez (Mr. Activities), Christopher Cruz, (Mr. Gablettes) and Keanu Soto (Mr. Drama). All are certain they will win the crown and have the privilege of being named Mr. Coral Gables 2010.

When asked why he should win, Guttierez replied, “Because I’m a shining beacon of light.” Cruz had similar confidence when he responded, “I’m going to blow them out of the water.”

Dubbed funny man of the show, Soto promises a good show saying, “I’m back from the dead and ready to party.”

Robert Novo, this year’s Mr. Wrestling, said, “Not only can I win this year, I will perform better than [Gonzalez] did. I’m the best looking guy out there and with just one act I’ll beat everyone else.”

Psychology teacher Lauren Noval is assured that this year’s pageant will top last year’s.

“We’ll do it better because it’s a combined effort of strengths. Isabella Dominguez and the junior Gablettes are helping with the choreography to help make it a better show overall,” said Noval. “We have big shoes to fill from last year’s routine because last year was amazing, but I have planned some tricks that will impress the audience.”

Junior underdogs are also excited about the competition. Favio Vizcaya, who is running for Mr. Cavalier Singers, will be wearing his lucky boxers to add some “good fortune” to his performance. Daniel Crespo will be running for French Club because, “I’ll win you over with my crepes!”

Seniors Freddy Valle and Joel Alvarez are looking forward to being in the show. Valle is running for Mr. Badminton and is doing it for fun and just wants to be part of the pageant.

“I’m just doing everything I can before I graduate,” Valle said. “I’m going to try my best, I don’t know how to get the crowd going but I’ll see what I can do.”

Alvarez elaborated on his being a well-rounded student and having leadership skills that explain why he should win. His confidence came from being unafraid of what people have to say. He explained, “I’m pretty sure about myself and the things I can accomplish.”

The contest for the crown will consist of a preliminary interview, a swimsuit portion, talent performance and finally, a question that will determine their final score.

Students like Sierra Karr, are excited for the pageant. “Hell yeah, swimsuit portion!” Karr said.

The preliminary interview will give them a score with which they start out the pageant. That score is added to the points acquired from the swimsuit portion, and the combined score that determines the top 10 contestants.

The top 10 will perform their talent along with their own entourage. This is when the show really starts. Interpretive dancing, weightlifting, raving, performing martial arts and juggling, to name a few, brought the crowd to a roar of delight last year and it can only be expected that this year will be even better.

After the talents are presented, the contest narrows down to the last five. Then, these five will be asked a final question that will ascertain the winner of 2010. Scores will be tallied and only one will be declared the privileged title of Mr. Coral Gables.

Save the date: Mr. Coral Gables pageant will be held on Feb 23 in the auditorium for $10. The money will go towards paying for the buses to transport the cheerleaders, Gablettes and Color Guard to the football games next year because the School Board will no longer finance the trips.

Support the school by spending an evening watching men wearing swimsuits and showcase their talents.
